As we entered the new millennium we witnessed a year of great progress for the Association in the province. Among the many highlights of the were:
Galway added to their haul of All-Ireland titles when coming through the back door to win the 2001 All-Ireland football championship, defeating Dublin to win the 2002 Under-21 football championship and retaining their All-Ireland Minor hurling title to bring their tally to five.
Roscommon Junior footballers also had a very good year and took the All-Ireland Junior Football title by defeating Kerry in the final.
The Mayo and Galway Ladies Gaelic footballers also brought great honour to the province in 2002 by sweeping the Senior and Junior titles respectively in the All-Ireland finals
In the FBD league new ground was broken when Mayo travelled to New York to play the home side in the final and continued to Chicago to play a local selection there.
