Tourlestrane(Sligo) and Killannin(Galway) face off in the final of the Connacht GAA Senior Club Football, Leo Kenny Memorial Cup, on Tuesday 15th August at 8pm in the Connacht GAA Centre. The game will also be streamed live on the Connacht GAA YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_W_yh0FO_fyQw-BeP74xKA
The Connacht GAA Senior Club Football Competition is dedicated to the memory of former Leas Uachtarán of Comhairle Connacht, Leo Kenny. Leo was a member of the Allen Gaels Club in Leitrim, of whom he served for many years. He also served as an officer on the Leitrim County Board and the Connacht GAA Council for a long number of years. The competition which was formerly called the Millennium Cup Football Competition was dedicated to Leo, with the Connacht GAA Council designating the trophy as the Leo Kenny Memorial Cup. Hollymount(Mayo) became the first winners of the Leo Kenny Memorial Cup by defeating Killanin(Galway) in the final in 2000.
Tourlestrane who won the competition in 2011 had wins over Crossmolina Deel Rovers, Shamrock Gaels and Mountbellew/Moylough to reach this year’s final. The club have already captured the County Senior League in Sligo and defeated Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in the first round of their County Championship. Eamonn O ‘Hara and Gerry McGowan, who both serve as joint managers, will look to Brian Kennedy, Adrian McIntyre, Brian Egan, Cathal Henry, Liam Gaughan and team captain James Leonard to ensure success against the Galway side.
Having defeated Westport, Mícheál Bhreathnachs and Aghamore, and scoring 4-42 in their three games, Killannin will be hoping for better fortune following their defeat in their first appearance in the final of the competition in 2000. The club are awaiting their near neighbours Maigh Cuilinn in the 3rd Round of the Galway Championship having lost to Tuam Stars in Round 1 and recording 2-10 to 0-11 victory over Cortoon Shamrocks in Round 2. Killannin will call on the experience of the Sweeney brothers, Patrick and Cathal, Niall Walsh, Johnny Heaney and David Walsh to bring the Leo Kenny Cup West of the Corrib.
